Yesterday the discovery of an Earth-like, (allegedly) water-rich planet was announced. This warms the hearts of nerds like me and I am so excited about the upcoming research that will be done on this planet using the Hubble telescope!
In sort of related news, I'm reading the coolest book right now. It's called "The Pluto Files" and it's a history of the planet/former planet Pluto written by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. I know it sounds dry and dorky, but Tyson is HILARIOUS and the book is filled with tons of pictures which makes it easy to read, easy to understand, and pretty downright funny. I highly recommend!
My little sister (well...not SO little...she turned 18 last month) got her braces off today after about 3 years!!! Can't wait to see those pearly whites when I come down to NC for a visit this weekend! In fact, I'm heading to the dentist this afternoon for a cleaning so there will lots of bright smiles this weekend!

This is pretty cool, however I don't understand why they only look for carbon based life requiring water like we have here on Earth. I am always surprised that these scientists that are suppose to be forward thinkers can't get past the idea that "life" has to be exactly like it is here on earth. There were even theories that it may have been possible that we had some silicone based life instead of carbon based here on earth.
ReplyDeleteYes, I am a nerd also. I could keep going here but I am not sure if enough nerds would read this to care :)
I TOTALLY AGREE and have often wondered that myself!! My guess is that they look for carbon-based life because that's what we know?? And that there was nothing special about the formation of our planet so theoretically there could be more out there that formed in the same way??
